I had two meals on consecutive evenings. The first was absolutely delicious, stuffed chicken with a lovely mushroom sauce. On the basis of that meal, on he second night I decided to treat myself with a fillet steak for £28. Utter disappointment, steak wasn't trimmed neatly, very tough, miserly amount of veg, with a little pot of peas - I'm sure they were tinned!

We had a lovely meal there on our final day of our recent holiday in Colyton (11th June). More veggie options would be good, and possibly more healthy options for the children's meals - everything with chips, but what we had tasted great and that's what matters. The staff were really friendly and also helpful in giving us approximate timings for the arrival of the food as we had a diabetic 4 year old with us who needs her insulin 10 minutes before eating.

We ate at this pub three times during our stay in Colyton and was extremely impressed every time. The food was fantastic with fresh fish options available daily and the staff were all very helpful and accommodating. They kept a good selection of ales too if that is your choice of drink. Only open to the public four times a year, Shute Barton is a magnificent medieval house and National Trust property with royal ancestry. You can discover the great kitchen containing what is believed to be the largest fireplace in England and take a look at the attic room with its medieval roof structure. The house itself has no facilities or refreshments, but tea, cake and toilets are located at the nearby church during open weekends. It’s a charming place to visit for a wander around, daydreaming about its past. As we say, entry is a bit of a golden ticket as it’s only open on rare occasions, so for more information keep an eye on the website.

A small zoo hidden in the Axe Valley, Axe Valley Wildlife Park is a charming day out for the family, primarily aimed at families with children under 12 years of age. You can get involved with feeding the free-range birds and joining in with the daily talks about various animals who live there. In the summer holidays they have handling sessions, and animals range from zebras and antelope to bearded dragons and plenty of creepy crawlies!

Seaton Beach

Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon. The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.
An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline. Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end. There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town. As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location. There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler. There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind. Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall. There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by. Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites. There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.
A very lovely beach if you like stones! But great when the tide is right out and you can fossil hunting.

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Cobb Gate Beach, Lyme Regis

This pretty harbour town dates back to the 14th century, and is sheltered by a curving harbour wall, The Cobb, as its known contains a small sandy beach made famous in the opening shot of the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. You reach the beach between the RNLI station and the slipway, and there is lifeguard cover in the summer months. Activities nearby include fishing, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, surfing and water skiing, while facilities close to the beach include cafes and restaurants and toilets. There are lots of walks in the area including guided tours of the famous fossil bearing cliffs. There is paid parking nearby, Axminster train station is five minutes away as the crow flies and buses are available to the town centre. Dogs are allowed on the beach from 1st November to 30th March as long as they’re on the lead, but they are not permitted in the summer months.
Love the stroll along the Cobb beach and area so clean plenty of places to eat and drink. The locals are so warm and welcoming, can’t beat Lyme regis

Always raked and cleaned. Pretty safe, excellent lifeguards. Restaurants and cafes need to be open later. Toilets very clean but not enough of them so long queues. Watch out for seagulls stealing food from your hands!

Lovely harbour and great places to grab a bite to eat. But it is extremely busy. Every inch of the small patch of sand by the cobb was taken up but beach shelters, feet deck chairs etc. If your kids are not fussed about sand avoid the area if you want quite and relaxing. The other side of the cobb is quite and so are the toilets (which are clean)

In the picturesque harbour town of Lyme Regis, Town Beach is covered in pebbles at one end thanks to the coastal protection scheme that placed them there to provide essential care for the Marine Parade and the buildings along it. At the other end the beach has been built up with sand, no longer gets covered at high tide and provides an extensive beach area manned by RNLI lifeguards in the summer. There are kiosks, cafes, shops and restaurants bordering the beach, so it’s ideal for visiting with family and spending the whole day on the sand if the weather allows. The main sandy beach in the area, it’s a delight and easy to get to when on holiday in Dorset. There is paid parking nearby, so don’t forget your change, and remember that dogs are not permitted from 1st April to 31st October, while from 1st November to 31st March they must be on leads.
Nice clean beach with plenty of clean WCs and cafes. The sandy bit at the harbour is good for dogs to run around (out of season) and kids to dig in.

Great beach on the sandy side was really busy and made use of the boat hire on the beach which was great fun, seagulls are a real issue when it comes to food and we ate ours in our tent after my daughter lost a sandwich to one right out of her mouth.

We have had an amazing week at the cottage. Lots of fresh air, beautiful scenery, and wildlife. The coastal walks were stunning, and we have eaten some incredible cream teas! The weather has been wet but it hasn’t dampened our spirits and it has been lovely to see the countryside in bloom. We had a delicious meal at ‘The Pig at Combe’ and tasty fish and chips from ‘Fridays’ (in Seaton) snuggled up by the fire. Great to see the Coronation celebrations in the surrounding villages and have our own toast at the ‘oyster and fish’ restaurant overlooking the sea at Lyme Regis. Would recommend a game of crazy golf too, to fire up those competitive streaks! Can’t wait to come back and visit again soon.

We did enjoy our stay. The weather was awful but that is just a chance you take in October. The cottage is well placed to explore west Dorset and south east Devon so there was no shortage of places to visit or to eat in spite of coronavirus restrictions.

Lilac cottage has everything you need for your stay its fully equipped, we enjoyed our stay especially with the stone walls kept it very cool in the recent heatwave. We visited lots of places one we especially liked was Burrow Farm gardens in Dalewood, Axminster which was 14 minutes away and 6.6 miles, and after your walk around the gardens you could get light snacks and sandwiches at the cafe. Lovely day out.

We had a lovely meal there on our final day of our recent holiday in Colyton (11th June). More veggie options would be good, and possibly more healthy options for the children's meals - everything with chips, but what we had tasted great and that's what matters. The staff were really friendly and also helpful in giving us approximate timings for the arrival of the food as we had a diabetic 4 year old with us who needs her insulin 10 minutes before eating.

The food was fantastic with fresh fish options available daily and the staff were all very helpful and accommodating. They kept a good selection of ales too if that is your choice of drink. A friendly environment with efficient staff. The food was overpriced and not noteworthy. We regret to say that ribeye was bland, lacking depth of flavour, as did the fish. Clean and presentable, but unfortunately not worth the money. We would be most reluctant to go there again.

A small, family and dog friendly pub in the centre of Colyton which dates back to 1506 and is one of the oldest coaching inns in town. Good pub grub is availabile for lunch and dinner along with traditional Sunday roasts. Also boasts an indoor skittles alley to keep the family entertained.
Smashing dog friendly pub with great hosts Dave & Kas who make you feel so welcome. Ate their one night and food was excellent. The regulars were very friendly.

We stayed in Colyton last week and enjoyed lunch at the Merchant's Tearooms. We can recommend eating here and would visit again. Spotless tablecloths and traditional china and silverware. The menu offers very good food (the Roast Rhubarb Crumble and Clotted Cream is incredible). We visited several times and noted that the establishment is very popular with the locals and, with other tea rooms in the village, it's popularity says much for the quality.

It’s a charming place to visit for a wander around, daydreaming about its past. Seaton Beach is a mile long shingle beach overlooking Lyme Bay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of East Devon. The gently sloping pebbles make this an ideal place to take a dip or try your hand at windsurfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding with equipment easily hired on site.
An esplanade links Seaton town at one end of the beach and the popular Seaton Beach Café at the other. The South West Coast Path runs alongside the beach and a walk to the nearby picturesque village of Beer is a real treat. Dogs are welcome all year.

In our view one of the most picturesque sea sides in Britain. Not too much commercialism. A good walk up Jacobs Ladder, the gardens are great for the horticulturalists. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand. There is plenty of beach to wander up and down, and you can get away from crowded areas which are more to the town.

A small pebble beach in East Devon, Beer Beach is in a picturesque fishing village that hugs the shoreline. Parking is a little distance away from the beach itself, which is accessed via a sloping road and steps at the east end. There’s one large car park that’s around five minutes away on foot, and another smaller one in the centre of the town. As the beach is such an integral part of the town itself, there are cafes and shops close by, simply by dint of its location. There are toilets above the beach, so it’s got all the makings of a charming day out for the family in the summer, or somewhere to stroll and have a cup of tea if it’s a bit cooler. There aren’t any organized activities on the beach, so if you’re bringing the kids then keep that in mind. Dogs are not allowed on the West part of the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis

Named after the Duke of Monmouth who landed here in 1685 in an attempt to take the crown from King James II, Monmouth Beach is a large pebble and sand beach that stretches over a kilometer southwest from the Cobb wall. There are beach huts, a bowling green, the Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and paid car parks close by. Meanwhile, for those wishing to have their own exploratory adventures, you can find a layer of limestone called the ammonite graveyard at Monmouth Beach, containing a large number of (you guessed it) ammonites. There are numerous walks close by and dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. There is lifeguard cover in the summer, and all the town’s cafés, restaurants and amenities are within easy reach.
A very lovely beach if you like stones! But great when the tide is right out and you can fossil hunting.

We had a lovely holiday staying in the little sea house. Perfect location on the beach. Was very warm & cosy inside. Was generally clean on arrival but think it could do a intensive deep clean occasionally to clean racks /hard to reach places ( plug holes) but this did not effect our stay ( I’m just bit OCD with cleaning) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing tranquil break. Also the out hours staff from toadhall cottages were very helpful. Would book again

Cobb Gate Beach, Lyme Regis

This pretty harbour town dates back to the 14th century, and is sheltered by a curving harbour wall, The Cobb, as its known contains a small sandy beach made famous in the opening shot of the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman. You reach the beach between the RNLI station and the slipway, and there is lifeguard cover in the summer months. Activities nearby include fishing, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, surfing and water skiing, while facilities close to the beach include cafes and restaurants and toilets. There are lots of walks in the area including guided tours of the famous fossil bearing cliffs. There is paid parking nearby, Axminster train station is five minutes away as the crow flies and buses are available to the town centre. Dogs are allowed on the beach from 1st November to 30th March as long as they’re on the lead, but they are not permitted in the summer months.
Love the stroll along the Cobb beach and area so clean plenty of places to eat and drink. The locals are so warm and welcoming, can’t beat Lyme regis

Lovely harbour and great places to grab a bite to eat. But it is extremely busy. Every inch of the small patch of sand by the cobb was taken up but beach shelters, feet deck chairs etc. If your kids are not fussed about sand avoid the area if you want quite and relaxing. The other side of the cobb is quite and so are the toilets (which are clean)

Town Beach, Lyme Regis

In the picturesque harbour town of Lyme Regis, Town Beach is covered in pebbles at one end thanks to the coastal protection scheme that placed them there to provide essential care for the Marine Parade and the buildings along it. At the other end the beach has been built up with sand, no longer gets covered at high tide and provides an extensive beach area manned by RNLI lifeguards in the summer. There are kiosks, cafes, shops and restaurants bordering the beach, so it’s ideal for visiting with family and spending the whole day on the sand if the weather allows. The main sandy beach in the area, it’s a delight and easy to get to when on holiday in Dorset. There is paid parking nearby, so don’t forget your change, and remember that dogs are not permitted from 1st April to 31st October, while from 1st November to 31st March they must be on leads.
Nice clean beach with plenty of clean WCs and cafes. The sandy bit at the harbour is good for dogs to run around (out of season) and kids to dig in.

Great beach on the sandy side was really busy and made use of the boat hire on the beach which was great fun, seagulls are a real issue when it comes to food and we ate ours in our tent after my daughter lost a sandwich to one right out of her mouth.

Excellent area and beach although extremely busy if the sun makes an appearance. I go to Lyme Regis whilst dogs are allowed on the beach (I do use it with my dog) and would like to see more policing re dogs off leads.
